CEDAR CITY — A large construction truck tipped over just west of Brian Head on Thursday, causing traffic delays in the area.

The incident, which was reported shortly before 11:30 a.m., involved a semitractor equipped with a crane such as that typically used in roofing operations.

Deputy Jared Burton of Brian Head Marshal’s Office told Cedar City News the incident happened as the truck driver was leaving Brian Head and about to start heading back down the canyon toward Parowan. The crash occurred near mile marker 14, about two turns before the “S” curve near the top of the canyon, he said.

“He was heading home and was going too fast around the corner,” Burton said, “He tipped it over.”

Although the driver was taken to a local hospital, Burton said the man’s injuries are not believed to be serious.

“He had some minor injuries but nothing major,” Burton added.

The vehicle, however, sustained significant damage in the crash. Ladd’s Towing was called in to remove the wreckage from the roadway, a process that took a few hours.

In the meantime, SR-143 was closed in both directions around the crash site and traffic was detoured via Spruce Street.

“They’re just taking a little bit of a loop,” Burton said during a phone call from the scene, noting that the detour was typically adding about 20 minutes for most drivers.

The scene was fully cleared and the road was reopened shortly before 4 p.m., Burton said later.

This report is based on preliminary statements from law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
