Entering its 45th year of offering classes, clubs, activities and events to community members, the Institute for Continued Learning is opening registration for the academic year.

According to a news release issued by the university, registration opens Wednesday, Aug. 28, and classes begin Sept. 9. The semester kicks off with a free ice cream social and registration event from 2-4 p.m. on Aug. 28 at the St. George Social Hall, 47 E. 200 North.

“ICL is an entire community of clubs, social events and professional courses, all for the incredibly affordable price of $60 per semester,” Robert Kramer, director of the institute, said in the press release. “ICL programs are entertaining and support cognitive, physical and social health.”

The Institute for Continued Learning features more than 70 classes taught by experts in the field and fellow institute members. While the institute attracts a large number of retired and semi-retired community members, it is open to anyone of any age.

Classes change every semester but range from actively participating in exercise and wellness programs, art classes and piano lessons to lecture-style courses on financial planning for retirement, Utah history and Mark Twain.

Other classes include instruction on local geology, archaeology, art, engineering, travel, literature, botany, local history, wildlife and indigenous plants, as well as sessions on colossal engineering failures and the origins and contributions of human nature and nurture in daily life.

A community of active lifelong learners, ICL also offers wellness programs, field trips and social activities to enhance members’ intellectual and creative growth and well-being.

By joining the Institute for Continued Learning, which costs $60 per semester or $90 for the year, community members can take as many ICL classes as they would like.
