The Iron Peak Fire in Iron County was reported to have erupted around 1 PM on Wednesday, August 21st, and was estimated to have grown to 75 acres by around 4:30 PM. The fire was reported to be a “wind-driven” event and by 5:30 PM, the fire had grown to an estimated 400 acres. As of 3 PM today, the fire is currently 0% contained, and an estimated 800 acres have now burned.

One issue currently facing firefighters is that this area/acreage has not been accurately mapped, prompting an urgent mapping mission earlier today. We are currently awaiting updates regarding the mapping mission. The fire was reported to have been burning in a northeast direction.

Due to limited road access, firefighters are having difficulty accessing the wildfire. Air attack crews were called in shortly after the fire was reported since the terrain is so challenging.

Aviation crews have managed to effectively limit the fire’s growth, and crews are said to have started their hike in through access points to support suppression efforts.

As of 9:30 AM this morning (Thursday Morning), the fire is experiencing moisture from an incoming storm. Winds up to 25 mph may occur, increasing the potential for further growth. Iron Peak Fire has not seen any significant movement in any direction today due to the storm’s precipitation. There is currently no loss of structures or infrastructure, and no evacuations have been ordered.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. We will update this report as more information becomes available.
