The Kanab Arts Board Exhibition is ending the year by featuring two of our local mixed-media artists. At the Kane County Hospital, we have Linda McCowan, with a collection entitled ‘Heartscape: Mixed Media, Poetry & Beyond.’ Linda will also feature samples of her wonderfully talented Re-Creation Retreat student’s work from recent art classes.

At the Kanab City Library, we have the idyllic and often whimsical painting of local sceneries on wood by Andrew Sears.

Linda McCowan has been a resident of Kanab since 2005. Originally from New Zealand, she earned her Bachelor’s Degree of Arts in Hawaii, served on the Kanab Arts Board from 2019-2023, and teaches teen art at the Re-Creation Retreat.

According to Linda, she is often lured into art by discarded domestic items of historical or personal value. These items speak to her about their history, and she readily accepts their challenge to give them a new life. She embraces the philosophy of perfectly imperfect, engaging, and intentional art. She believes that in “mark-making, there are no fixed rules, only guidelines and a lot of practice if you desire specific outcomes.”

Andrew Sears grew up in Salt Lake City. In the 1950s, he earned his first artistic revenue by selling a drawing to a local newspaper. He drew greeting cards and created his own greeting card website, which he had worked on for about ten years. He moved to Kanab in 2017 and was inspired by its red rocks, the surrounding national parks, and local wildlife. Andrew also works in mixed media, often drawing with a digital drawing board and transferring his art to wood with select inspirational words. When people view his artworks, he wants to evoke memories of happy times to give them a smile while imparting a feeling of peace, spaciousness, fresh air, and sunshine.
