“Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.” – AtThePAC.org
“(This) production of Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling was in the upper echelon of any show I’ve ever seen. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better show for your time and money. I laughed, I cried, and I have thought about the show regularly since.” Scott Savage of Utah Theater Bloggers.
If you are looking for an entertaining and deeply moving piece of theater, look no further than the newly renovated Performing Arts Campus on South Main Street in St. George. The unbreakable bonds of friendship are again on display in the return of Steel Magnolias, a JanB Production, in the venue’s first official stage play.
Reprising their roles from a successful summer run at The American Crossroads Theater, (formerly SimonFest) this cast of six women have polished their performance and eagerly bring this beautiful story to life. Written by Robert Harling, Steel Magnolias is a heartfelt tribute to his sister Susan, who passed away due to complications related to diabetes.
The story centers around a group of friends in north Louisiana preparing for the wedding of Shelby, daughter of long-time beauty shop patron M’Lynn. The experiences of marriage, motherhood, and mortality directly parallel the life of Harling’s sister in beautiful admiration. The cast of characters includes Ouiser and Miss Clairee, long-time best friends, and spunky shop owner Truvy. Adding a layer of mystery and sincerity, Annelle, the newest member of the bunch, rounds out an iconic sampling of true sisterhood. Steel Magnolias explores the complexities of life through a dialogue ranging from quick wit to profound sorrow, all smothered in a bit of honey.
Jan Broberg, producer and actress portraying M’Lynn has the recent and real-life experience of donating a kidney to her sister earlier this year. On returning to the stage post-surgery, Broberg said, “I have a deep and abiding gratitude for the relationship of sisters, mothers, daughters, and friends. The lengths we will go to protect, defend, and care for each other in all our imperfections is the point – to live beyond our comfort zones.” Like the women in Steel Magnolias, the ultimate hope for anyone in attendance is to move on through life’s challenges of victory and defeat “hopefully while holding someone’s caring supportive hand.”
Visit AtThePAC.org for tickets and more information. Steel Magnolias is scheduled for November 6, 7, 8, 11, and 12 at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $30 and will be available at the door.
