ST. GEORGE — Four Region 9 softball teams finished in the top eight in 4A and earned byes into the second round of the upcoming state tournament.
Region 9 champion Desert Hills was unbeaten in region play and 20-3 overall, claiming the No. 2 seed in the 4A state tournament bracket released Wednesday morning.
As with all prep sports in Utah, the softball seeds were determined using the ratings percentage index (RPI) formula.
Snow Canyon (17-6) earned the No. 3 seed and Cedar (17-7) is No. 4 going into the state tournament.
A fourth Region 9 team, Hurricane (15-9) claimed the No. 8 seed. All four Region 9 teams will host a best-of-three series in the super regional round, beginning May 9.

Region 11 champion Ridgeline (23-1) is the No. 1 overall seed. The Riverhawks’ sole defeat was a 5-3 setback against Spanish Fork on April 22.
Ridgeline is on a six-game winning streak and scored 267 runs in the regular season while allowing 32. That’s an average margin of victory of 11.1-1.3 per game.
The three other Region 9 teams begin their playoff journeys on Friday in the regional round.
No. 12 seed Crimson Cliffs (12-10) will host No. 21 Pine View (3-19) in Washington Fields at 4 p.m. in a best-of-three series.
And No. 19 Dixie (6-18) will open the playoffs on the road at No. 14 Logan, also Friday at 4 p.m.
