ST. GEORGE — A fire burning near the Oak Grove Campground spread from 5 to 22 acres over the course of a few hours on Monday.

The fire was reportedly started after an all-terrain vehicle caught fire on the side of the road in the Dixie National Forest a short distance below the Oak Grove Campground, Hurricane Valley Fire District Battalion Chief Tyler Ames told St. George News.

It was reported at approximately 3:40 p.m., according to WildCAD-E, a computer-aided dispatch system. And as of approximately 6:30 p.m., it had grown to 22 acres.

“It’s not under control yet,” Ames said, adding that “there’s a lot of resources, and they’re getting a pretty good handle on it.” Resources were dispatched from across the Color Country Interagency Fire Center’s district, including those from Dammeron Valley Fire and Rescue, the Washington City Fire Department, the Utah Department of Natural Resources Forestry, Fire and State Lands, the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service.

Earlier that afternoon, Utah Fire Info reported there were six fire engines, two squads and law enforcement on the scene with the Cedar City Hotshots en route.

No people or structures are reported as threatened at the time of this report. However, Hurricane Valley Fire advised people to avoid the area in a Facebook post.
