ST. GEORGE — Live chalk art demonstrations and honoring the environment will be featured during the Zion Chalk and Earth Fest in Springdale this weekend.

“The artists will already be working, so in addition to seeing all of the phenomenal art, you actually get to see it done live. They’re performing artists, if you will,” Robyn Sanders, Springdale events coordinator, told St. George News.

Zion Canyon Village will transform into a staging area for artwork, vendors, a beer garden, live music and food outlets. Educational booths and sponsors will also be present at this free event, which will be held at 147 Zion Park Boulevard, near the Zion National Park South Entrance area.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21, with live entertainment from 2-8 p.m. at the Zion Canyon Village. Volunteers can sign up for a two-hour shift at this link. Best Friends Animal Society also is expected to bring some adoptable animals.

Past Earth Day celebrations in Springdale have ranged from a service project to music and educational vendors, including the Citizens Climate Lobby, Zion National Park and the Zion Forever Project.

Sanders said the town scaled back the event a couple of years ago, but it has extended the festivities to two days the last two years. Springdale has teamed up with Z Arts and all Zion Canyon Village businesses to revamp it into a Chalk and Earth Festival.

“Our first year went really well. We had about 30 artists last year. This year, we have about 52, including a bunch of Hurricane High School students. So we have upped our game a little bit this year and we’re excited to see how things pan out,” Sanders said. “We have a lot of our featured artists coming from California and then the other half of the festival is all local, Southern Utah and northern Utah artists.”

Sanders said there will be sections of large and small art pieces. Educational vendors will be in the grass area inside the beer garden. She thanked Zion Brew Pub for managing the beer garden.

“The Brew Pub will be doing our beer garden, and everyone that has really stepped up, all of our sponsors have accommodated all of our artists coming into town, and it’s been great having so much of the community back the event,” Sanders said.
